Iqra' (To Read)

13/4/2017, 16 Rejab 1438H

Surat Al-`Alaq (The Clot), Chapter 96, Verse 1:

96:1

"Recite in the name of your Lord who created -" (Quran 96:1)

Iqra'

Iqra' (Arabic) means 'to read'. Iqra' is the first word revealed by Allah to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through angel Jibrail (Gabriel).

Allah > Angel > Prophet > Quran > Judgement Day > Qada' & Qadar

Quran is not revealed for Muslim only, but for all mankind. It is good for us to read and understand the Quran, at least once in our lifetime. So that, we will be guided and for us to know what will happen to us in afterlife (Judgement Day). Quran as the source of knowledge for guidance in this earthly life and map to paradise in afterlife.

Iqra' as first word of revelation

"The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed book, which when they give it to the one who is literate, saying, "Please read this," he will say, "I cannot, for it is sealed."
Then the book will be given to the one who is illiterate, saying, "Please read this." And he will say, "I cannot read
(Isaiah 29: 11-12)

7:157

“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.” (Quran 7:157)

It mentioned in the Bible and Quran that the first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad was Iqra' which means 'Read'. He got his first revelation when he was 40, at Hira' cave. Angel jibrail visited him.

29:48

"And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt." (Quran 29:48)

It mentioned in the Bible that the final prophet is illiterate. Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write (illiterate). There is no way that Prophet Muhammad plagiarize the Bible, but means that he got revelation from the same God, Allah swt through angel Jibrail.

Quran and Hadith as the source of knowledge

There are too many knowledges in Quran, followed by Hadith, heaven and Earth. There were too many Muslim scientist in early centuries. The western scientist also learning arabic to understand the messages in the Quran. Since Allah is the creator of this universe and the living things, He mentioned about His creations and power, in the Quran. It is like a manual of instruction from a Creator to the Creation, to be refer to. For example, when you buy a new car, the car manufacturer will give you a car manual to be refer. So, similar concept to the Quran, Allah give mankind perfect set of instructions to be refer and follow, that will bring benefit for ourselves, our family, neighbourhood, country, animals, plants, universe, etc.

Knowledge is power

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah makes the way to Jannah easy for him who treads the path in search of knowledge." - [Muslim].

In Quran and hadith, there are too many knowledge. The more knowledge you have, the more powerful you will be. Knowledge may 'beat' ignorance. With knowledge, you will not be cheat or lie. By sharing our knowledge, is helping others to improve their lives. Journey to seek knowledge, is rewarding by Allah and means the journey to paradise.

Darkness to light

By seeking knowledge, will bring you from darkness to light. May Allah guide us from darkness to light.
